Intro

I’ve seen a trend of user feedback around opening linked cards within the Web App and Guru Chrome Extension and wanted to share a feature suggestion!
 

TL;DR In both the Guru Extension or the Web app, Guru defaults to opening linked cards in the Guru Extension - and I don’t believe there is a hotkey or click to open via new web app tab, causing frustration, confusion, and additional clicks.

 

Context & Behaviors

Web App: User views A Guru card in the App which links to another Guru Card, and wants to open linked Guru card in a new Chrome tab (web app) instead of the Extension
Chrome Extension: User views A Guru card in the Extension which links to another Guru Card, and wants to open linked Guru card in a new Chrome tab (web app) instead of the Extension

 

Actual Behavior Expected Behavior
Click/Control click both open the card via Chrome Extension (this happens in the web app even without the extension appearing to be open) Control click opens in new tab (this is the function in Guru Chrome)


Impact

Sometimes users want to view certain cards via web app, but the extension makes this more difficult:

  • It takes users additional/unnecessary clicks to open a card to view in web app
  • User expects Control Click Chrome functionality to work even within the extension - resulting in frustrating when it doesn’t
  • Links to non-Guru cards open in new tab - so this contradicts that expectation/functionality
  • Additional frustration/confusion is caused with this functionality in the web app
    • User is in Guru Web App, so they expect more typical Chrome behavior
      • e.g.  click to take them to a new Guru Card
      • e.g. Expects new click to open card in New tab
      • This is especially true when the are in the Web app without the Guru Extension actively open

 

Currently, the only way to open the card in a new web app tab is to use one of the following workarounds:

  • Right click and open in new tab (which doubles the clicks required)
  • Copy the card link and control new to open a new tab then paste card link (even more extra clicks)

I came to the community to post this very thing! This is a great post. When I am in the web app, and click a linked Guru card, my expectation would not be for it to open in the Extension, but to take me to that card in the web app. Only if I clicked the link in the extension, would it show the card in the extension.

This is a massive upvote from me. I can see this behaviour frustrating a lot of my company.
